Studs! Hell Bent for Leather
Video, 19:37mins, 2019
New Art Gallery Walsall
22 June - 1 September 2019

Commissioned by New Art Gallery Walsall and Home of Metal, a social history project which looks at the origins of Heavy Metal in the Midlands. Exhibited as part of Alan Kane’s 4 Bed Detached Home of Metal exhibition.

The video essay performs a psycho-geographical reading of the post-industrial Black Country town of Walsall (UK), drawing links between the town’s historic leather trade, local band and heavy metal pioneers Judas Priest and queer leather and fetish culture.

The film includes a mix of contemporary observations and archival footage, as well as interviews with local fans and historical paraphernalia and context from the Walsall Leather Museum and the UK Leather & Fetish Archives at the Bishopsgate Institute.
